In 2013 my band, Laura Monk & High Cotton filmed a music video up at Foxfire in Rabun County, Mountain City, Ga. We are honored to be included in the 50th Anniversary edition of The Art of Simple Living. This book is the latest in the long running collection of books about life in and around Appalachia.
The song Appalachia Goodbye was written by band member PJ Engman and tells the story of the Sassafras girl. The grounds and cabins of Foxfire make the perfect backdrop for this video.
While the band is no longer together, Laura Monk and her husband, John are in a new band, Pickxen. Still making music and still playing up at Foxfire any chance they get. They perform at festivals, wineries, house concerts and corporate events. For more information about their music or to find out about having Pickxen play for your next event please contact us at: [email protected]
Foxfire is a one of a kind thing…it is land, it is history, it is faith, it is trust, it is food for the soul, it is strong, it is family, it is still growing. Okay, so maybe it is at least 8 things to me! I have loved this place and it’s purpose since I stumbled upon it while working as a camp counselor during my freshman year of college at Camp Dixie in Clayton, Ga. I continue to fall in love with it every time I visit.
Thank you especially to Ann Moore and Kaye Collins for all the work and love you continue to poor into this heavenly place. I am so thrilled to be a part of the written and sung works of Foxfire.
